And the costs related to stolen or lost laptops are staggering in particular for business losses.
If you've never had this happen to you, then you are lucky... You are existing on borrowed time as far as that goes. And if you have, then you'll know that you don't want to experience the heart-stopping feeling that goes with it ever again! The lesson here is that we always think that stuff happens to other people. Even so, we insure our houses and phones... Just in case!
So, when it happened to me, I decided to look at backup services. I use Dropbox, and it's great as far as it goes. There's a 2GB data limit on the free plan, but you can increase that to 18GB with referrals. Increasing it gets quite expensive with 100GB costing $9.99 per month. Also, I have to choose what gets backed up. And when I hit the limit, I have to work out what to put elsewhere.
For the princely sum of $3.96 per month (1 cup of decent coffee) on a 2 year contract (or $5 monthly paid), they backup my entire laptop. No data limits and after the initial backup, they do background incremental backups, so it gets faster. I can also manually throttle the bandwidth so I can have faster internet when I need it! It monitors my file system and starts a backup when I add, remove or edit a file. It's also available for Mac and the reassuring thing is, it was built by ex-Apple employees.
